Feuille de choux

In practice

Feuille de choux

do•doc as a layout tool for writing and making a collaborative newspaper.

A series of three week-long workshops with different primary school classes in the Drôme (France). The theme: making a newspaper from A to Z with do•doc, in which pupils talk to us about the environment.

These workshops were run with the association Désert Numérique and video artist Sarah Brown.

Over three week-long workshops held during school time between April and June 2018, the children make their own newspaper, on paper and on the Internet. Together they decide on the editorial content and use playful, artistic, technical and digital means to create their articles, lay them out, publish them and finally share them.

The Feuille de choux project aims to introduce children to journalism: observing, gathering information, making editorial choices together, summarizing, creating artwork… The children become budding journalists and create three issues of a shared newspaper that brings together the work of the three classes: a newspaper about the environment, made by children for children.

On the one hand, this project aims to raise pupils’ awareness of the media and teach them about it. On the other, the newspaper’s theme, the environment, leads them to ask questions and think about today’s environmental issues. The topic is offered to the children as a starting point for collective reflection and investigation, which they then share with those around them through this printed newspaper.

The videos below show what happened behind the scenes of Feuille de Choux. They were made by Sarah Brown during the workshops and with the children:
